Our Fifth Annual Back to School Dinner was a success! Held on Wednesday September 28, 2016 at the UM Newman Alumnae Center, the dinner raised over $35,000 to help cover tuition and school supplies for the children of Zanmi Beni. Christmas is a special time of year, allowing us to celebrate family and friends and the feeling of togetherness the season brings. Christmas is also a perfect time to give back to others. Over the month of December the dedicated volunteers at Friends of Zanmi Beni as well as our dear friends and supporters at Peace, Love, World did just that! Both groups worked to collect presents for the staff and 64 children of Zanmi Beni. The list included essentials such as flashlights and batteries to special gifts like jewelry, dolls, and clothes. In September 2015, I spent 2 days at Zanmi Beni working with the cooks at Pwason Beni and Boulanjri Beni. I had been invited by Loune to bring recipes to the team, using familiar and available Haitian ingredients in new ways.
At Pwason Beni, 6 or 7 of us gathered around the prep table with knives and cutting boards and concentrated on knife-work for the recipes. On Saturday, February 21, 2015 Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and a congressional delegation visited Zanmi Beni. According to the Pelosi Statement on Congressional Delegation’s Visit to Haiti, the delegation “… learned of the great work the Zamni Beni Foundation is doing to provide a home and care for children who were displaced after the devastating 2010 earthquake.”

Abandoned disabled Haitian children baptized into the Christian family
A celebration of Baptism for the 64 children of Zanmi Beni was held on December 21, 2014. The beautiful ceremony was held on the grounds of Zanmi Beni – “A Place to Call Home” and witnessed by over 150 friends and guests. Music and singing was lead by the children, all dressed in white baptismal dresses or suits. Friars from the Southern Dominican Province presided over the ceremony.
